A rising real-estate investor tied to a troubled East Orange apartment complex is facing federal charges for conspiracy to commit wire fraud amid a broader federal investigation into commercial mortgage fraud.

Mordechai Weiss, a New York-based investor, was charged last week in New Jersey federal court with conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Prosecutors haven’t indicated whether the charges are directly related to the East Orange property.
