Scammers target ESL customers with fake texts asking to verify accounts

WEBSTER, N.Y. — A Webster man is warning others after receiving a text from a number claiming to be ESL Federal Credit Union asking him to verify his bank account.

Christopher DeLoria got the text last night, but he closed his ESL account more than eight years ago. He also changed his phone number since he closed that account, so ESL wouldn’t have his new number. DeLoria said he instantly could tell he was looking at a fake message.

“I think I’m smart enough to realize that there’s a lot of scams out there, and I always look at the (website) address or something like that,” he said. “And it’s the address that popped out. And the fact that they want my information for an account I don’t even have.”…
