Seekonk man testifies he feared driver in Uber assault case

SEEKONK, Mass. (WPRI) — A Seekonk man took the stand Friday as his trial continues over allegations that he forced an Uber driver down a dimly lit, secluded driveway and threatened to kill her during a ride in April 2025.

James Oakes, 26, faces multiple charges, including strangulation or suffocation, kidnapping, unarmed robbery, and assault with intent to rape.

The victim told police Oakes had finished a beer before getting into the car. Prosecutors said he canceled the trip midway and demanded the driver follow a new address he provided. They allege he wrapped his arms around her neck, made an inappropriate sexual comment, and threatened her life twice when she tried to escape…
