Worcester Detectives Nab 3 in Long-Running Gage Street Murder Case

Worcester police detectives on Friday arrested 26-year-old Juan Ruiz and charged him with murder in the 2019 shooting death of 18-year-old Tafar Lewis. Authorities say Ruiz was taken into custody without incident after a renewed push in the long-running investigation that also produced probable cause to charge two other men. Those two, Juan Otero and Mugisha Jean-Bosco, were already behind bars on unrelated matters when detectives moved to add murder counts. The arrests mark the first public breakthrough in the case since Lewis was killed in July 2019.

Police account and arrest details

In a press release, the Worcester Police Department said detectives from the Unresolved Homicide Unit, Crime Gun Unit and Gang Unit arrested Ruiz on April 3, 2026, on a warrant charging him with murder. According to the department, new information developed with assistance from the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office and prosecutors in District Attorney Joseph Early Jr.’s office allowed investigators to establish probable cause in the case. WPD described the arrest as “without incident” and credited a lengthy investigation for the development. The department also posted the announcement on its official Facebook.

Who else is charged

Ruiz has been charged alongside Juan Otero and Mugisha Jean-Bosco, both of whom were already in custody on separate matters, according to reporting that republished coverage from the Telegram & Gazette. AOL News says investigators developed probable cause to add murder charges, and that Otero is in federal custody while Jean-Bosco is held in state custody on unrelated charges.

How the 2019 killing unfolded

Tafar Lewis was shot and killed the night of July 2, 2019; he was found wounded on Gage Street and later died at a hospital, CBS Boston reported. The shooting happened shortly after the city’s Fourth of July fireworks and prompted a vigil in the neighborhood in the days that followed. The 18-year-old had been pursuing music, and the death drew attention from local artists. Earlier coverage noted rapper Joyner Lucas offered to help cover funeral costs, per WCVB.

Investigation and next steps

The Worcester Police Department said detectives worked closely with the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office and the district attorney’s office to develop the case, calling the new charges the product of “dedication and hard work” by investigators and prosecutors. The Worcester Police Department did not list court dates in its announcement and said the investigation remains active.
