AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – On this episode of the Yellow City Rundown for the week of March 30-April 3, we focus on changes coming to the SNAP program, a new online option for the Amarillo Independent School District, and legal challenges filed over proposed horse racing license relocation to Clovis.

Top the Panhandle:

  • Texans will see a change to their SNAP benefits
    • This month kicked off a major change for Texas recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. They will no longer be allowed to purchase items like sugary drinks and candy.
    • Haley Stoddard, United Way of Amarillo and Canyon Senior Director of community impact added that with the new changes in place, grocery stores must highlight to families what products are okay to purchase with SNAP.
  • Amarillo ISD announces flexible learning option
    • Beginning in August 2026 Amarillo Independent School District is set to introduce Amarillo ISD Online for students in grades 6-12.
    • Officials said Amarillo ISD online will offer complete virtual and hybrid instruction in courses already offered through the district. AISD shared hybrid students can participate in extracurricular activities including AmTech Career Academy, athletics, band, choir and orchestra.
  • Legal challenges filed over proposed horse racing license relocation to Clovis
    • Multiple groups have filed legal challenges against a decision to relocate a horse license from Farmington to Clovis, according to court documents.
    • According to the documents, opponents argue that the Racing Commission lacked the authority to approve the relocation. The filings also claim the move could negatively impact the economy in Farmington, where the license is currently based.

    • A fire broke out at the Mae 1 Theatre in Plainview. Employees were able to keep patrons calm during the chaos and avoided loss of life, and only escaped with minor injuries.
