SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A 28-year-old Mexican national residing illegally in Bountiful, Utah, was sentenced to five years in prison for possessing and intending to distribute methamphetamine and for illegal reentry into the United States.
Juan Alexis Castanon-Chavez was sentenced to an additional year of supervised release and will be remanded to the Federal Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation proceedings upon release, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah.
Court documents reveal that on March 2, 2025, agents conducted a controlled purchase of narcotics from Castanon-Chavez, who brought approximately eight kilograms of methamphetamine to sell to an undercover agent. Authorities seized about 7,930 grams of methamphetamine from his vehicle, which tested positive for the drug.
