Portland leaders want to dole out fees for vacant buildings downtown. Stakeholders aren’t having it

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – It’s hard to ignore the empty buildings with “Vacancy” or “For Lease” signs lining the streets of downtown Portland.

Now the City of Portland is commissioning a new study that will cost about $62,000 to see if a fee could cut back on these empty spaces. It’s part of a controversial new strategy to tackle empty storefronts and housing by imposing a potential fee on landlords who leave spaces vacant for too long.
