Walter Scott family to host remembrance event on 11th anniversary of killing

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — The family of Walter Scott will host a community remembrance and healing event Saturday to mark the 11th anniversary of Scott’s fatal shooting by a North Charleston police officer, an incident that drew national attention and intensified scrutiny of police use of force.

The “Day of Grief Relief & Community Unity” is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Park Circle Park. Organizers say the gathering is intended to honor Scott’s life while providing space for healing, connection and support for families and community members affected by police violence across the Lowcountry.

Scott, a 50-year-old father and U.S. Coast Guard veteran, was shot multiple times in the back during a traffic stop on April 4, 2015.
