Charlotte men sentenced in 18-year-old’s shooting death during bogus drug deal

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two men were sentenced to prison for their involvement in the shooting death of an 18-year-old in an alleged drug deal gone bad in October 2024, court records show.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police found 18-year-old Zachary Evan Rieken shot to death in a wrecked car on James Blakeney Avenue on Oct. 26, 2024. Security video showed a person pulling out a gun and shooting into Rieken’s car, which drove off and crashed. The shooter and others jumped in another vehicle and sped off.

Sanjie A’Nee Johnson pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit armed robbery with a dangerous weapon in the case. He was sentenced to up to 201 months in prison. He was given credit for 517 days served since his arrest in November 2024. A second defendant, Maximillian Karl Ruggiero, accepted a plea deal for accessory after the fact to second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 67-93 months in prison to be served consecutively with any sentence he’s currently serving…
