DES MOINES, Iowa — Some librarians are speaking out after a bill originally intended to prevent cities from creating their own city health departments was amended this week to allow civil lawsuits against libraries.
The amendment, H-8277, was written by Representative Charley Thomson of Charles City and was attached to Senate File 2432, a bill eliminating a city’s ability to create a city board of health or health department.
The amendment would prevent children from accessing “material harmful to minors,” which the legislation mainly defines as content including sexual acts. Representative Thomson told WHO 13 News that his goal is to protect kids from obscene materials…
