NPS seeks public input on cleanups at former Mississippi firing ranges

RIDGELAND, Miss. (WJTV) – The National Park Service (NPS) released reports and administrative record files about the former Ridgeland Firing Range and the former Port Gibson Firing Range, both located on the Natchez Trace Parkway, for public review and comment.

The Ridgeland Firing Range operated from 1984 to 2002 in Ridgeland, and the Port Gibson Firing Range operated from 1984 to 2002 in Hermanville. Officials said the NPS is working to address possible contamination at the sites under a federal environmental law.

The reports, known as an Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis, explain the current environmental conditions at the sites. Officials said the reports also present possible cleanup options, including recommended plans. The administrative record file consists of information considered or relied upon in preparing the report.

The reports can also be reviewed in person at the Natchez Trace Parkway Visitor Center, located at 2680 Natchez Trace Parkway in Tupelo, during regular business hours from Monday to Friday…
