Westport flooding project nears completion as World Cup deadline approaches

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A nearly $30 million project to end decades of flooding in Westport is nearing a critical milestone as construction crews race to finish underground work before the World Cup.

KC Water is building two massive underground stormwater basins designed to capture floodwater and release it slowly, preventing streets from flooding during heavy storms.

“We’ve got two big underground basins. We’ve got a 1.5 million gallon stormwater basin here. We’ve got a 2 million gallon stormwater basin down under Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park,” said Jackson Overstreet, KC Water spokesperson.
