US 24 resurfacing project east of Peyton set to begin April 6

The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contract partner, Schmidt Construction Company, will begin a surface treatment project on April 6 along US Highway 24 in eastern El Paso County. Paving work will take place on a ten-mile stretch from east of Peyton to Calhan, between Mile Point 332 and Mile Point 342.5. The project is expected to be completed by late September.

CDOT has undertaken similar resurfacing work on rural highways in the region. In May 2025, a road resurfacing project began on CO 59 near Kit Carson in eastern Colorado.

“US 24 is a busy highway for eastern El Paso County travelers,” said CDOT Regional Transportation Director Shane Ferguson. “The new road surface will make travel smoother for commuters, agriculture and freight traffic.”

The work will include minor culvert repairs, curb and gutter replacement, construction of a passing lane east of Calhan and widening of a right-turn lane at Yoder Street to improve safety. The improvements will create a smoother roadway with increased resistance to rutting and road damage…
