Bill re-imagining Kentucky State U as polytechnic, but keeping HBCU tradition, goes to governor

FRANKFORT, Ky. — With approval in the state House of Representatives, the General Assembly has passed legislation aimed at resetting and reimagining the future of Kentucky State University (KSU), advancing a collaborative plan to support the commonwealth’s only historically Black university and position it for long-term success. Senate Bill (SB) 185 previously passed the Senate with unanimous support.

SB 185, filed and sponsored by Senate Budget Chair Chris McDaniel, R-Ryland Heights, has the support of KSU President Dr. Koffi Akakpo and Council on Postsecondary Education President Dr. Aaron Thompson, who helped craft the plan.

The measure reflects months of coordination among legislative leaders, such as McDaniel and Senate Minority Floor Leader Gerald Neal—D-Louisville and KSU alumnus—and university officials and higher education stakeholders to address current challenges while building a stronger foundation for the future…
