Worker killed after 48,000-Lb. spool falls on top of him

A warehouse employee was killed Tuesday when a massive aluminum spool fell from an overhead crane at a Carol Stream facility, PEOPLE reports.

The 55-year-old man was attempting to load the 48,000-pound metal spool onto a flatbed truck around noon at S&S International, 457 St. Paul Blvd., when part of the crane broke, according to the Carol Stream Police Department.

The spool crashed to the ground and struck the worker, who died of his injuries despite receiving immediate care. Police told ABC affiliate WLS that a crane strap may have given way, causing the man to die instantly…
