Portland Mayor Keith Wilson requests millions from other counties for homeless shelters as cash dries up in Multnomah County

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson is turning to other counties for cash to fund the city’s homeless shelter system as its usual partner, Multnomah County, faces a financial cliff in its homeless services budget.

Wilson recently sent letters to both Washington and Clackamas counties asking for millions to support city-run shelters. The Washington County Board of Commissioners will hear out his request for $6 million on Tuesday, according to the county agenda. Wilson has asked for the county board to commit funding by Wednesday, April 8, according to county documents.

Washington County Chair Kathryn Harrington did not immediately respond for comment. The board agenda indicates that the county, which includes a slice of Portland and cities like Beaverton and Hillsboro, is considering sending over a “minimum of $1 million.”…
