- I never cared about Easter. Now that my kids are all grown up, it’s the easier holiday for them to come home. (businessinsider.com)
As a mother who once poured all her holiday energy into Christmas, I’ve come to realize that sometimes the traditions we cling to need a fresh start. For years, I made Christmas the centerpiece of our family celebrations-baking cookies, decorating the tree, and hosting festive parties. But now that my sons are adults with their own lives and plans, the Christmas I once knew feels out of reach.
Easter, on the other hand, has always been a bit of a mystery to me. Growing up, I never connected with its customs-the pastel dresses, the chocolate bunnies, or the egg hunts seemed odd and a little confusing.
Plus, without a religious connection, Easter just didn’t hold much significance. But as my family’s holiday dynamics shifted, I saw an opportunity in this overlooked weekend.
This year, I’m embracing Easter as our new family tradition. Rather than competing for time during the busy Christmas season, I’m stepping into the role of the “default Easter mom.”
I’ll visit my sons in the city for a relaxed brunch, watch a movie at a quirky art-house theater, enjoy chocolate and casual drinks, and spend the evening playing board games. No pressure, no gifts, just time together on our own terms.
By choosing Easter, I’m freeing us all from the complications and expectations that have made Christmas feel stressful. It’s a chance to create something easygoing and meaningful-a holiday that fits where we are now. And come December, I plan to let go of the old Christmas rituals entirely, maybe even taking some time for myself.
Sometimes traditions evolve, and sometimes it’s okay to start fresh. For me, Easter is that fresh start, a new chapter in family holidays that feels just right.
