Madison Cunningham brought a full crowd to Cat’s Cradle for an intimate performance on Monday night, March 30. She recently released her fourth studio album, “Ace,” exploring heartbreak after her divorce and the journey towards rediscovering herself. The deeply emotional setlist brought the audience into her world.
Cunningham has previously been nominated many times at the Grammys and won Best Folk Album for her third studio album, “Revealer.” Her intricate instrumental work undoubtedly sets her apart and is showcased live on “The Ace Tour.”

Annika Bennett opened the night, acoustic guitar in hand, accompanied by Josh Warren on piano. Her soft and airy vocals set the mood for the evening. She played songs across her discography, including several from her latest album “Triple Shooting Star.” Her most popular song, “A Tree Falls,” highlighted her honest lyricism, with many people in the audience holding their hands to their hearts, clearly moved.

Lights dimmed as Madison Cunningham made her way to the piano bench. Her light blue, flowy dress matched the stage design. It was set with tall grass, reed plants, rocks, and moss surrounding her. The lighting on the stage mimicked the surface of water, immediately transporting the entire room to the lakeside. Joining her on the other side of the stage was Jesse Chandler, a key musical collaborator on “Ace.”
The sonic chemistry between Cunningham and Chandler had everyone in awe. Many pedals and a variety of instruments, like bass clarinet and flute, were used. It created an expansive and immersive sound. Specifically in “Golden Gate (On and On),” the pedal gave the guitar a fuller, rock-like resonance, which elevated the live rendition.
An aspect of their performance that stood out was the art of silence. They were not afraid to let a note linger or leave a moment completely quiet.
