Local mother honors son’s memory by volunteering with homeless services organization

SAN DIEGO — A San Diego mother is channeling her grief into service, volunteering with PATH San Diego—a nonprofit dedicated to ending homelessness—in memory of her son, who died from an accidental overdose in 2022.

Mimi Murray has become deeply committed to PATH San Diego after her son Michael received housing and support services from the organization at Connections Housing, a 14-floor building in downtown San Diego that provides resources for people experiencing homelessness.

“He found PATH, and we found PATH, and he died in 2022 from an overdose, and our commitment to PATH in his memory just grew and grew and grew,” said Mimi Murray.

Michael Murray was a Naval officer who graduated from Villanova University and served eight years in the U.S. Navy. At age 40, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and eventually became homeless. Michael died in November 2022 from an accidental fentanyl overdose at age 49…
