FAYETTEVILLE — The Wilson Warbirds closed out their Single-A Carolina League season-opening series with a 9-4 win over the Fayetteville Woodpeckers on Sunday at SEGRA Stadium, claiming the three-game set.
Wilson (2-1) broke open a tie game with a three-run seventh inning after Fayetteville had rallied from an early deficit. Tied 4-4 entering the inning, Warbirds catcher Luis Corobo started the rally with a walk, and left fielder Luiyin Alastre followed with a single. Second baseman Luis Lameda then delivered the key swing, lining a single to right that scored both runners and moved him to third on an error. Third baseman Filippo Di Turi added an RBI double later in the inning to extend the lead to 7-4.
The Milwaukee Brewers-affiliated Warbirds jumped in front in the third as right fielder Handelfry Encarnacion blasted his first home run of the season, a three-run shot to make it 4-0. The previous batter, shortstop Brady Ebel, drove in a run with a bases-loaded groundout…
