KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Overcoming Believers Church in Knoxville gave away thousands of dollars in gas on Saturday as part of its “Gas & Glory” event ahead of Easter.
When Star Starks, the church’s director of service, arrived at the gas station at 6:30 a.m., there was already a line. Throughout the day, people waited to get $20 of gas while volunteers kept them engaged with a “testimony area” and a bingo board, Starks said. When they finally reached the pump, church members would pray for them and invite them to the Easter service.

A 6 News crew spoke to Stark who said the church was trying “to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the community” during hard times. Originally, the church said it planned on giving away $8,000, but later, it said nearly $10,000 had been given. Starks said that they had raised the money with donations from both members and non-members.
“When we think about the significance of this weekend and really how Christ sacrificed so that we could have life, and gave us so many, I mean his entire life was a testament to how we should live,” she said. “And the Word says, ‘Whatever you do for the least of these you do for me,’ and so we want to make sure we’re doing everything we can to serve within this community.”
Starks said there were more than 65 volunteers.
