E-Bike Battery Sparks Deadly Fire — San Jose Resident Dies After Trying to Save Home

SAN JOSE, Calif. — A man has died following an early morning apartment fire in San Jose that officials say was sparked by a rechargeable e-bike battery.

According to the San Jose Fire Department, the fire broke out around 8:30 a.m. Saturday inside a residence on the 4200 block of Norwalk Drive.

How the Fire Started

Fire officials said the blaze began when a lithium-ion battery from an e-bike started to spark, quickly igniting flames inside the apartment.

At the time of the incident, two people were inside the home.

  • One resident was able to escape safely
  • The other remained inside, attempting to put out the fire
