Amarillo Fire Department responds to Saturday grass fire on east I-40, injures 1 firefighter

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Amarillo Fire Department responded to a vegetation fire on vacant land in the 6000 block of East I-40 on Saturday.

According to AFD officials, crews found an active grass fire upon arrival that was approximately 20 acres with burning debris, including tires and other materials. Officials noted that the fire was brought under control within one hour, and all units were released after ensuring the perimeter was extinguished.

AFD noted that one firefighter sustained an injury and was transported to a local hospital, but was released in good condition. Officials noted that the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, as a bystander reported the fire while using a grinder on a trailer.
