Van Aken District cracks down on ‘teen takeovers’ with tougher chaperone rule

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio — The Van Aken District is expanding its chaperone policy, now requiring visitors under 18 to be accompanied by an adult starting at 4 p.m. — four hours earlier than before.

“If you’re under the age of 18 after 4 p.m., you can be at the Van Aken District, but you have to be with a chaperone at least 25 years of age or older,” said the district’s General Manager Jesse Rathner. “And the amount of those under the age of 18 to a chaperone — it’s one chaperone per four.”

The updated policy took effect in early April and makes permanent a rule first introduced on a temporary basis last August, when minors would need to have a chaperone starting at 8 p.m…
