Military assets from Arizona likely used in rescues of downed airmen in Iran

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — An elite squadron of combat search and rescue (CSAR) airmen, based at Davis Monthan Air Force Base, is mentioned by two military news sites as taking part in the dramatic rescues of a pilot and weapons systems officer, who ejected from their fighter jet, which was shot down behind enemy lines last week.

Both airmen are now in U.S. custody and expected to survive, although the weapons systems officer was injured and reportedly hid in a mountain area for more than 24 hours before he was rescued.

“The fact that he didn’t get caught is a testament to the fact that he had fantastic willpower, he knew what to do, and the training was spot on,” said Mike Canada, who is a former military contractor who flew drones in combat search and rescue operations in Iraq and Afghanistan…
