North Shore Residents Blame Drainage System Failure for Severe Flooding Damage

HONOLULU, Hawaii — Residents along Oahu’s North Shore say a possible failure in the city’s drainage system may have worsened the devastating flooding that swept through their neighborhood just weeks ago, leaving homes damaged and families facing major financial losses.

Neighborhood Hit Hard by Rising Floodwaters

In the area between Ke Iki Road and the shoreline below Pupukea, floodwaters rose rapidly during the recent storm, reaching levels many residents say they had never seen before.

For longtime resident Karen Costello, the damage was deeply personal.

“The water went up to there,” she said, pointing to debris lines near the top of her fence. “I had all my children’s photos and my college track stuff, and that was all destroyed.”…
