ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – New research examines how environmental and social factors affect cognitive health.

Researchers say they are learning more about outside factors that biologically age the brain. A study in Ireland found air pollution, access to healthcare, and socioeconomic status all play a role in brain health. The stress caused by issues like poverty and inequality can age the brain faster, raising the risk of dementia and cognitive impairment.

Low birthweight tied to stroke risk

Being born with a low birthweight could raise the risk of stroke later in life. A study in Sweden found that people born with a lower than median birthweight had an 18-23 percent greater risk of having a stroke in young adulthood and middle age. While the reason for the connection is not clear, researchers say doctors could use low birthweight to assess if someone is at a higher stroke risk.
