The Union Starbucks opened its doors for the last time on March 31, before its closure to begin construction on a new in-house cafe that will offer Voltage Coffee products.
The change comes following the university’s decision not to renew its expiring contract with the national brand. Instead, the university has chosen to search for local vendors, like Denton Downtown Square’s coffee staple, West Oak Coffee Bar and its Voltage brand, to collaborate with in the creation of a new cafe for the space.
“We knew a little bit before everybody else, but they kind of just let us know like ‘Hey, due to cuts and stuff, they’re going to be closing down the Union [Starbucks],’” said Izabella Partida, media arts sophomore and Union Starbucks barista. “[…] The stand will be staying open and most of us will be placed over there and next semester we will be brought back here.”…
