A 45-year-old man who allegedly pointed a firearm at neighborhood children has been taken into police custody after a multi-hour standoff on Easter Sunday evening.
Wichita Police Public Information Officer Rick Pena said the disturbance in the 600 block of South Eastern was reported just before 7 p.m. Sunday, April 5. Callers and neighbors told police that an armed man in the east Wichita neighborhood had pointed a firearm at several children, Pena said.
When officers attempted to make contact with him, Pena said the man made threats toward law enforcement and barricaded himself inside his apartment.
Around 8:40 p.m., a temporary shelter in place order was put in effect for nearby residents. Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said officers used all of the technology at the department’s disposal, including drones and dog, crisis negotiation and SWAT teams, to peacefully take the man into custody…
