Rio Cosumnes Inmate Dies After Daytime Seizure As Sacramento Jail Death Toll Rises

A 57-year-old man jailed at Sacramento County’s Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center collapsed in an open housing pod Sunday afternoon after what deputies described as a seizure and later died at a hospital, officials said. Deputies and on-site jail medical staff performed CPR, briefly restored a pulse and rushed him to a local trauma center, but he did not survive, according to the sheriff’s office.

Seizure Reported in Open Pod

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said other inmates alerted deputies at about 2 p.m. that the man was having what appeared to be a seizure. Staff found him unresponsive on his bunk and immediately started life-saving measures. He briefly regained a pulse before being taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that evening, according to CBS Sacramento.

Charges and Custody History

Officials have not released the inmate’s name, pending notification of his family. According to the sheriff’s office, he had been in custody since Nov. 5, 2025, and was booked on multiple felony sexual-offense charges, including allegations involving minors under 16. Bail in the case had been set at $1,000,000, according to The Sacramento Bee.

Investigation and Next Steps

The sheriff’s office said it will carry out an in-custody death investigation consistent with department policy and state law. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause of death and will release the man’s name after next-of-kin notifications are complete. The department’s transparency page outlines how in-custody deaths are reported and disclosed, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
