April snowfall not unusual across parts of SD

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Easter weekend delivered a reminder that winter isn’t always finished in South Dakota, as parts of the northern region picked up near—and even over—a foot of snow.

Easter Weekend featured some impressive snow totals for portions of northern South Dakota, with several locations seeing near and even over a foot of snow. Fortunately, it won’t last since we’re in April now, but that got me to thinking about how often we see snow this late in the season.

We’ll set the benchmark at one-tenth of an inch of snow, which is the minimum for snow to be considered as “measurable” in our archives. On average, Sioux Falls sees one day in April with measurable snow. What’s interesting is that we’re on a nine-year streak with at least one day featuring measurable snow.
