Gilbert Council to weigh divisive retail rezoning case

Gilbert Town Council is set to decide Tuesday whether to allow a big-box retail project at Higley and Ocotillo roads that has drawn strong opposition from nearby residents.

The proposal would rezone a 16-acre parcel from a smaller-scale “shopping center” designation to “general commercial,” clearing the way for a 128,660-square-foot Target anchor store in an area that exceeds the current limit for retail buildings’ size to 75,000 square feet.

Residents have pushed back on the plan for months, raising concerns about increased traffic, noise and whether the project fits the surrounding neighborhoods, which were originally planned for less intensive commercial development…
