Cool and Quiet to Start the Week

  • Highs in the lower to middle 40s today
  • Major warmup by Wednesday with highs in the 60s
  • Active weather pattern ahead with several rain chances starting Tuesday night

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – After a quiet Easter Sunday, the weather pattern across south-central Wisconsin is beginning to transition to more active. A series of shortwave troughs will approach the upper Midwest. For the early part of the week, Madison and the surrounding communities will deal with a lingering layer of low-level moisture.

While a strong surface high is currently retreating toward the East Coast, the return flow from the south is bringing in warmer air that is riding over the cooler, denser air near the surface. This setup is creating a classic overrunning scenario, leading to persistent cloud cover and periods of light showers and sprinkles through Tuesday morning.

While widespread severe weather is not currently anticipated, the lift provided by the associated cold front could trigger some embedded convection. Temperatures will likely peak in the low to mid-60s before the frontal passage occurs late Wednesday night.

Looking Ahead…

By Thursday and Friday, south-central Wisconsin will settle into a much more stable, post-frontal air mass. Drier air filtering in from Canada will scour out the clouds, leading to a stretch of pleasant, sun-filled afternoons…
