Hawaiʻi tsunami safety tips for residents and visitors

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Phones buzz. Sirens sound. All while the ocean looks calm. In Hawaiʻi, a tsunami can reach the shore with little warning. This is why April is Tsunami Awareness Month for both residents and visitors.

It is a time to learn what the alerts mean and what to do next.

This year also marks 78 years since the April 1, 1946 tsunami. The waves from this event reached 33 to 54 feet in some areas. It killed 158 people, injured 163, destroyed hundreds of buildings and led to the creation of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center…
