Asheville police crack down on loud mufflers, speeding downtown after community complaints

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Asheville police said officers issued nine citations during a crackdown on vehicle noise and reckless driving in the downtown area April 4, 2026.

Police said the effort was in response to community complaints about speeding, suspected street racing and loud mufflers.

“Our community has been clear about what they’re experiencing. This isn’t just about enforcement,” Asheville Police Interim Chief Jackie Stepp said in a news release. “It’s about making sure our downtown remains a safe, welcoming place for everyone.”…
