Portsmouth Peace Week aims to foster nonviolence in youth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — What started off as a Peace Camp five years ago at the Cavalier Manor Rec Center in Portsmouth has now turned into Peace Week.

“We started off at Peace Camp, partnered with the Parks and Recreation, doing a three-day camp right here at Cavalier Manor,” said Carlton Copeland, executive director of A Purpose Driven. “And then in the second year, it expanded to five days, the third year to six, and then last year, it expanded to Peace Week.”

Sponsored by the Portsmouth Police Department as Portsmouth United, Peace Week is designed to foster nonviolence as well as provide essential resources to the youth during spring break, offering kids a safe, positive learning environment while out of school…
