City of Rockport to temporarily change disinfectant in water on May 11

The City of Rockport will temporarily change the disinfectant used in its public water system from chloramine to free chlorine beginning Monday, May 11, a process expected to last about two to three weeks.

City officials said the temporary conversion is part of routine maintenance designed to maintain adequate disinfectant levels throughout the distribution system and improve overall water quality. During the conversion period, residents may notice temporary changes in the taste or odor of their water.

Public water systems are required to maintain proper disinfection levels. Chloramine – a disinfectant formed by combining chlorine and ammonia – is commonly used because it remains active longer and helps limit certain byproducts.
