Byron native Braden Smith recovering from line drive to the face

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — It was a touch-and-go weekend for a few moments for former Byron High School two-sport star athlete Braden Smith. He now pitches for the University of Central Florida.Friday night, while pitching for UCF at West Virginia Smith was struck in the face by a line drive. He was down on the field for 15 minutes while he was tented to by trainers and medical personnel. Smith eventually rose to his feet and was carted off the field and taken to a hospital.A University of Central Florida staff member told me today (Monday), that Smith spent Friday night in a West Viriginia hospital as a precaution. Early Monday morning Smith arrived back on campus at UCF from West Virginia by car because he wasn’t able to fly. The staff member tells me that Smith is doing well, and Smith will soon meet with team doctors to be reevaluated. Until then, they’re not sure when Smith might pitch again.Smith is in his first season at UCF after transferring from D2 Maryville University in St. Louis. Smith started this season strong.
