(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — One person died in the hospital following a head-on crash between two vehicles on Highway 16, near Mesa Ridge High School, on Monday, Apr. 6, according to the Fountain Police Department (FPD).

Police reported that at around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, FPD officers and fire crews responded to the crash at Mesa Ridge and Syracuse Street and found four victims at the scene. The front seat passengers in both vehicles were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Both drivers were also taken to the hospital, but with injuries that were not life-threatening. According to FPD, one of the passengers was pronounced dead soon after arriving at the hospital.
The FPD Major Crash Unit took over the investigation and learned that one of the vehicles had been turning left from eastbound Hwy 16 to northbound Syracuse Street, and the other vehicle was driving west on Hwy 16 when they crashed in the intersection. FPD stated that at this time, it appears that speed and right of way are considered factors. Nothing at this time indicates the impairment of either driver.
According to FPD, this is the first traffic death in Fountain in 2026. At this time in 2025, there had been no traffic deaths in Fountain so far…
