Predawn Shooting Near Downtown Phoenix Sparks Blockwide Police Standoff

Streets just outside downtown Phoenix turned into an active crime scene early Monday after officers found a woman with gunshot wounds and then locked down a nearby home in a barricade situation. The woman was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive, while police surrounded a house close to where she was found and brought in a command vehicle as they worked the scene.

First responders were dispatched shortly after 2:30 a.m. to reports of a shooting near 29th Avenue and Polk Street, just north of Van Buren Street, according to Arizona’s Family. Phoenix police located the woman at the scene and transported her to a hospital, where officers said she is expected to recover.

The department has recently leaned on tactical resources and mobile command posts during barricade responses, a strategy that can keep scenes active for hours. In March, a North Phoenix apartment standoff ended with officers exchanging fire, and the Phoenix Police Department later released a critical incident briefing that outlines how scenes like this are managed.
