Mobile weighs $141K for new cameras after park shootings exposed system gaps

MOBILE, Ala. (NBC 15) — Mobile city leaders are considering spending more than $141,000 on new surveillance cameras as part of a broader effort to upgrade the city’s system. The push comes after high-profile shootings at Sage Park and Langan Park last year revealed some cameras were not working or recording at the time. Public Safety Executive Director Curtis Graves says the city has already upgraded nearly 700 cameras out of about 1,200 across the system.

“They’re being changed on a one-on-one basis,” Graves said. “We definitely want to remove all our analog cameras and replace them with digital cameras.”

The cameras are being installed in parks and parking areas, but officials are not releasing exact locations for safety reasons. Graves also would not say if they have the capability to read license plates but did acknowledge the city uses LPRs…
