SACUA talks University Athletic Department oversight, generative AI restrictions

The Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs met in the Alexander G. Ruthven Building Monday afternoon to elect a new chair and vice chair for the 2026-2027 term and discuss increased oversight of the University Athletic Department and action against student use of artificial intelligence.

SACUA Chair Derek Peterson opened the meeting with the officer election. Information professor Kentaro Toyama ran unopposed to replace Peterson as SACUA chair. Following, Public health lecturer Kirsten Herold ran unopposed to replace Dr. Soumya Rangarajan, clinical assistant professor of internal medicine, as vice chair. Toyama and Herold were both confirmed.

Peterson then discussed a resolution that would grant SACUA faculty oversight of the Athletic Department and Advisory Board for Intercollegiate Athletics — a board that advises Athletic Director Warde Manuel. Peterson criticized the University’s investigation of Sherrone Moore, former Michigan football head coach, and said ABIA hired outside officials to investigate Moore rather than conduct an internal investigation…
