Man acquitted of kidnapping, convicted of assault in Uber driver assault trial

(WJAR) — A jury delivered a split verdict in the trial of a Seekonk man accused of attacking his Uber driver, finding him guilty on some charges while acquitting him of the most serious allegations.

James Oakes, 26, was found not guilty of strangulation, kidnapping, and assault with intent to rape. He was found guilty of assaulting a person over 60, interfering with a driver for hire, and robbery.

A judge sentenced Oakes to up to four-and-a-half years in state prison, followed by three years of probation with conditions, including no drugs or alcohol…
