Council holds off on approving arts grants amid questions on budget shortfalls

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Jackson city leaders are holding off at least for another two weeks in deciding whether 21 nonprofits in the capital city will receive grant funding amid continued questions over budget shortfalls.

On Tuesday, the city council tabled a motion to award some $71,500 in grants to various arts projects and events, after council members raised concerns about unfilled positions and potential layoffs.

“We’re talking layoffs. You’d rather give somebody $1,000 to do a project that affects 300 people rather than feed somebody who has kids at home? That doesn’t make sense,” said Ward Two Councilwoman Tina Clay…
