Scammers posing as sheriff’s deputies are threatening residents and demanding thousands of dollars through Bitcoin machines, prompting an urgent warning from Sheriff Javier Salazar.
Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said it recently learned of the scams, in which someone impersonating a deputy calls a resident claiming that person missed jury duty or has an active warrant for their arrest. In many cases, victims hear they can avoid arrest if they immediately send money — often thousands of dollars — using Bitcoin kiosks or other cryptocurrency payment methods.
