‘Mill that went to the moon’: An Upstate textile town’s legacy in the space race

GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – A small textile community in South Carolina’s Upstate is stitched into the history of space exploration.

In Slater, an unincorporated mill village in Greenville County, the Slater Mill produced a crucial component used in Apollo-era spacesuits: beta cloth, a heat-resistant material designed to help protect astronauts.
