What should have been a routine Thursday morning in Avondale Estates turned chaotic when a speeding SUV tore through downtown, smashing into multiple storefronts along North Avondale Road, city officials said. The Dodge Durango left the roadway, ran over outdoor tables and a tree, and slammed into a violin shop while also damaging a nearby bakery. Three passengers stayed behind at the scene, but the driver took off, and no injuries were reported.
According to WSB Radio, City Manager Patrick Bryant said the Durango “left the roadway, ran over a tree, launched a light pole into the marquee of our historic theater.” Investigators recovered several firearms, marijuana, and seven cell phones from the SUV and found evidence of alcohol consumption, the station reported. No arrests had been made as police continued to search for the missing driver.
The crash hit a stretch of North Avondale Road that has already been a sore spot for merchants thanks to a lengthy street-improvement project. Late last year, FOX 5 Atlanta reported that business owners were frustrated about how ongoing construction was choking off foot traffic and access as the city adds bike lanes and pedestrian upgrades.
