Speeding Durango Turns Avondale Estates Main Drag Into Crash Zone, Driver Vanishes

What should have been a routine Thursday morning in Avondale Estates turned chaotic when a speeding SUV tore through downtown, smashing into multiple storefronts along North Avondale Road, city officials said. The Dodge Durango left the roadway, ran over outdoor tables and a tree, and slammed into a violin shop while also damaging a nearby bakery. Three passengers stayed behind at the scene, but the driver took off, and no injuries were reported.

According to WSB Radio, City Manager Patrick Bryant said the Durango “left the roadway, ran over a tree, launched a light pole into the marquee of our historic theater.” Investigators recovered several firearms, marijuana, and seven cell phones from the SUV and found evidence of alcohol consumption, the station reported. No arrests had been made as police continued to search for the missing driver.

The crash hit a stretch of North Avondale Road that has already been a sore spot for merchants thanks to a lengthy street-improvement project. Late last year, FOX 5 Atlanta reported that business owners were frustrated about how ongoing construction was choking off foot traffic and access as the city adds bike lanes and pedestrian upgrades. Thursday’s collision underscored how vulnerable the narrow commercial corridor can be when a vehicle barrels through at a high rate of speed.

Police Hunt Driver As Evidence Mounts

Police said three passengers remained at the scene and cooperated while officers fanned out through the surrounding area looking for the driver. The items recovered from the Durango, along with signs of alcohol consumption, are now central to the investigation, WSB Radio reported.
