Norfolk couple sentenced to 25 years each in killing of disabled lodger

A disabled man’s final days inside a Norfolk apartment ended in prolonged violence, prosecutors say, after a couple who had taken him in turned on him over rent and chores, culminating in a killing that left a body hidden in their home for two days.

NORFOLK, VA – Kristie Lynch was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison for the murder of 45-year-old Jose Moreno, matching the sentence previously handed to her husband, James Lynch, in the same case. The couple were convicted along different legal paths—Kristie Lynch by jury verdict in September and James Lynch by a prior guilty plea—but received identical prison terms for Moreno’s death in August 2023.

Moreno, who used a walker due to a physical disability, had been invited to live with the Lynches after meeting them at church in 2022.
