Ethics Commission fines Burrillville DPW director for violation of nepotism law

BURRILLVILLE – The Rhode Island Ethics Commission has found that Burrillville Public Works Director Jeffrey McCormick violated state ethics law in his day to day supervision of his sister as a town employee, as well as his approval of matters related to her timecard and payroll.

McCormick was issued a $1,000 fine to settle the matter in a decision issued last month.

The ruling comes in response to a complaint filed last August by another DPW employee, James Larivee, who also serves as the president of Burrillville Town Employees Local 186, Council 94.

Larivee noted that at the time, McCormick was serving as the direct supervisor for his sister, DPW administrative aide Kelly Robinson. He said that McCormick allowed Robinson to come into work 30 minutes earlier than her normal start time, which no one else is allowed to do, and that she was not required to use the punch clock.
