Drought continues to worsen over the state of Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – We received an update on the drought monitor Thursday morning (4/9/2026) and it is not looking good across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

83% of the state is now under some level of drought with many areas now in Severe drought conditions. This includes areas from the Northern Neck back to the west including Caroline county, much of Hanover county and much of the western Piedmont.

The metro Richmond area is in moderate drought. Note that the area of excessive drought in North Carolina is beginning work into far southern Virginia including parts of Mecklenburg and Brunswick counties.
